Bedminster, Pennsylvania, August 4, 2023 - As safe, effective medical uses of cannabidiol (CBD) continue to grow around the world, a hemp grower in the small agricultural community of Bedminster Township, Pennsylvania has made history with the first-ever legal shipment of CBD hemp flower into South Korea (Republic of Korea, ROK). 

Deep Run Hemp, in collaboration with AK Ventures, Inc. and Oregon Hemp Genetics, coordinated the shipment to the Seoul National University, Department of Hemp Laboratory. International transportation was handled by 357 Canna-Logistics. The transaction, under the regulation of the Ministry of Food & Drug Safety, represents the first legal importation of dried, cured hemp flower into South Korea for research and development purposes. 

“The Seoul National University was looking for specific traits for its cannabis strains, starting with insomnia medication. We found those qualities in the strains developed by Oregon Hemp Genetics and grown by Deep Run Hemp,” said Alex Kim, President of AK Ventures, which is working with the ROK government to facilitate the development of hemp/cannabis-derived medications and health & beauty products in South Korea. Starting in October of 2022, this project took 11 months and required over 30 documents in order to complete the delivery of hemp flower to the University. 

Mr. Kim said that as South Korea looks to build an infrastructure for mass-market use of CBD products to treat afflictions in both humans and animals, it is taking lessons from the U.S. & Canadian hemp industry, which has grown rapidly since the legalization of regulated production of hemp and hemp derived products under the 2018 Farm Bill.  “In a little over three years, the hemp & cannabis industry has developed many amazing and beneficial uses of these plants and are helping millions of people find safe, effective relief.,” Kim said. “We are excited to be partnering with the North American hemp industry to facilitate availability and manufacture of these products in South Korea.” Mr. Cox, President of Deep Run Hemp added; “We are delighted to be involved in this history making international project and pleased that it helps promote worldwide awareness of Pennsylvania’s burgeoning hemp industry.”

Based in Bedminster, Pennsylvania, Deep Run Hemp is a small greenhouse grower of premium hemp flower and distributor of hemp-derived products. The company specializes in boutique cannabis strains and hand-curated harvesting. Deep Run Hemp has been a grower of Oregon Hemp Genetics’ specialized strains since 2019.
